Hair & Heritage
Editorial by: Robert Mensies
As one of the original tenants of Unicity Mall, Puressence Spa Salon has moved west down Portage Avenue, relocating twice before settling at Portage and Westwood Drive for the last 9 years. One of the main reasons for coming to the St. James area was the availability of the heritage bank building, offering a unique experience of old architecture with 14 foot ceilings and great customer service.
St. James BIZ contributed to the exterior of Puressence’s building when they painted businesses to unify presence through a visual program initiative. “Many businesses were painted in the area and it made a big difference to the entire outlook of the area” owner Darlene Caci said.
Puressence offers both salon and spa services; including haircuts, colouring, up-dos and highlights on the hair side; and the spa side offers manicures, pedicures, massages, waxing, face and body treatments. Owner Darlene Caci inherited the business from her husband who was the original entrepreneur, and runs the store with her the help of her daughter. “Both of my daughters followed in their father’s footsteps into hairdressing,” Caci explained. “My daughter Melissa now manages the store.”
Puressence Spa Salon may have changed locations over their 33 years in business, but it remains the same family business that focuses on their clients first. Even though over half of their clients come from within St. James, many loyal clients have followed them from location to location. “We strive to make our clients happy,” Caci said. “Our clients' satisfaction shows in the number of referrals we get.” Call for an appointment, 889-6634, 1835 Portage Avenue.
